“If you refuse to participate in politics, accept to be governed by your inferior” ~ Pleto

This year, the Delhi University Students Union (DUSU) is celebrating Navratri with a unique twist. Delhi University Students Union (DUSU) has decided to empower and encourage women by “One-Day President” initiative. This initiative was inspired by the famous Bollywood movie “Nayak,” where the protagonist becomes Chief Minister for one day. DUSU has decided to appoint a female student as president for each of the nine days of Navratri. This initiative mainly focuses on increasing women participation in student politics.

DuGirls

According to current DUSU president, Tushar Dedha, the Union has failed to have a female secretary for the last 15 years. He points out that the last female president was Nupur Sharma in 2008-09. Sharma was in headlines during the controversial statement regarding prophet Mohammed in June 2022. Dedha says, this one-day president program will encourage women to speak up for their rights and enter into politics.

The ‘Nayika’s of Navratri

What are the thoughts of the chosen presidents? What do they want to introduce in their 24 hours tenure? Here are few glimpses-

Sakshi Patel, a final-year student, focuses on affordable educational resources. She proposes setting up book banks in every college to provide textbooks and study materials to students facing financial difficulties. According to her, DUSU has lacked female presidents over the years. To change the situation it is very important for female students to come in front and take part in student politics activity.

Anshita Chauhan, a first-year student, has also been nominated for one day as president. The 20 year old kid is brimming with excitement. When she was asked about her policies, she preferred to emphasize student safety and well-being.  She particularly pointed out that those who are living in rented accommodations (PGs) face various kinds of difficulties. She proposes a DUSU-led program to inspect these problems and create more affordable stays for students.

Preeti Singh Jain, a second-year student, highlighted the importance of academic exchange programs. According to her, DU should implement student exchange programs on a regular basis. This would allow students to explore different academic environments and broaden their educational experiences. She proposed that at least every student should get a chance to spend at least one semester in another college.

Shyama Arunbhai Trivedi, a final-year student, brings attention to the needs of differently-abled students. She feels that existing support programs are often inactive. Though she is a symbolic president, she has chalked out her plan. Having one day in hand, she will work on for the betterment of the specially abled students.

Symbolic but Significant

By all the proposals and narratives we have heard, it leads to one important conclusion. This Navratri in Delhi University is completely different from other years. Finally the female students are coming out of their shell and sharing their thoughts. As a whole it will enhance the community and hopefully generate a holistic environment for education. Their thoughts are quite impressive and hopefully it will be implemented by the union even after their term ends.

DUgirls3

With the last female president in 2008-09, DUSU has lacked strong female representation. This initiative allows female leaders to come up and claim their rightful space in student politics. It sends a powerful message: women belong at the decision-making table.

The limited term of the one-day presidency might seem like a symbolic gesture. However, it can be a small beginning of long-term change. Such young girls will have an experience of responsibilities and hopefully understand the potential in them.

The landscape of higher studies in India has undergone a paradigm shift within the last few hours. University Grants Commission (UGC) Chairman Jagadesh Kumar has announced that post graduation or a masters degree is not required to pursue a PhD . This broadens access to PhD programs, students holding four-year UG degrees can now directly appear for the National Eligibility Test (NET). This eliminates the previous requirement of a master’s degree for NET eligibility.

Previously, the standard pathway to a PhD was to complete your masters degree and then appear for NET. If you are able to crack the exam then you can go for your research studies. NET serves as a national benchmark to assess a candidate’s eligibility for Junior Research Fellowship (JRF) and teaching positions in Indian universities and colleges.  However, this new regulation allows students with immense expertise in their respective field of study to pursue PhD just after UG.

PhD

Here is a detailed breakdown of the eligibility to be fulfilled for applying:

  •  Eligibility: Students who have completed a four-year undergraduate program with a minimum of 75% marks or equivalent grade can now directly register for the UGC-NET exam. There will be relaxations accordingly for SC, ST and OBC as per the guidelines by UGC.
  •  Exam Mode:  The upcoming UGC-NET exam, scheduled for June 16th this year, will be conducted in online mode. Students will go through a  Computer Based Test (CBT).
  •  Subject Choice:  This is the most significant change in Indian education history. Students can apply for any subject irrespective of the discipline of their bachelor’s degree, in NET. This allows for greater flexibility. If a student has a UG degree of chemistry then he or she can apply for History in NET.

UGC

This new policy by the UGC presents a bright opportunity for meritorious students. Previously if a student wanted to pursue PhD in neuroscience, he or she must have the M.Sc. The revised regulation allows this student to directly pursue their research passion in Neuroscience after clearing the UGC-NET exam. This would save their time and they would be able to devote more time towards research.

Of course, successfully completing a PhD program can be tough for students who have just graduated from colleges. So it is assumed that  Universities may have additional requirements for PhD admissions. They may introduce specific programs or contact separate entrance tests according to their considerations.

Students

The subject for the NET exam doesn’t have to be tied to your undergraduate degree. This opens doors for so many students who have some specific interest in some specific field of study. It allows them to explore research areas that truly ignite their curiosity. The upcoming June 16th UGC-NET exam holds immense significance in all aspects. But a question remains unanswered. How much will this arrangement be fruitful? Will the young minds who have just passed college be able to cope up with the sincerity of PhD? What are your thoughts? Share in the comment below.

Things are getting heated up in Kirori Mal College. Things got out of control last evening. All India Students’ Association (AISA) staged a protest on Tuesday against Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) at Delhi University’s Kirori Mal College. The event of RSS sparked controversy in the campus which eventually led towards a chaos in the college. The RSS, which is the ideological mentor of the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), organized a huge procession  ‘Varsh Pratipada’ (Hindu new year) on the college grounds. Dozens of students gathered at the main gate of the college, expressing their objection to the event.

AISA Students are Condemning the RSS

AISA

Anjali, secretary of AISA’s Delhi University unit, questioned the decision of the authority. She also highlighted how a college governing body permits a political institution to use their campus for their electoral benefits. “The RSS doesn’t represent any student group,” she argued. “We won’t let our colleges become breeding grounds for communalism”, Anjali went on saying.

Protest

Unavailability of Principal Raises Question

During the whole protest and the situation, College authorities, including Principal Dinesh Khattar, were unavailable. Whether permission was granted for the event or not – question remains unanswered by the authority. Moreover, this procession and the protest against it, again reveals the hold of the political parties on the colleges. Commenting on the situation, educationists said that such educational institutions should remain secular spaces free from political influence. However such an argument is only possible in an ‘ideal’ situation, in reality it hardly followed.

Students Demand Action on Women’s Safety at Delhi University

The protest at Kirori Mal College wasn’t the only student movement happening at Delhi University. A separate group also gathered near the campus and raised their voice regarding women safety in the campus. This group criticized the ineffectiveness of the Delhi University Students’ Union (DUSU) in controlling and handling such sensitive situations.

SFI

Led by Aditi, a postgraduate student, the group emphasized the urgent need for reforms which will ensure safety for women. Regarding this matter Students’ Federation of India (SFI), announced a memorandum by outlining their important claims. These demands aim to address the root causes of sexual harassment. To prevent such situation SFI suggested that –

  • Return of GSCASH: The memorandum calls for the reinstatement of the Gender Sensitization Committee Against Sexual Harassment (GSCASH). This committee would investigate and take necessary steps to prevent sexual harassment in the college.
  • Expanding Gender Sensitization: The students also demanded an increase in programs that promote gender awareness and respect. Such programs will broaden the minds of students and a harmony in the college will be reinstated.
  • Better Helpline Service: SFI urged college authorities to provide better and effective service with women’s helpline numbers. They also emphasized to create a response team to tackle any urgent situation.
  • CCTV Surveillance: SFI demanded for 24 hours CCTV surveillance in the college campus. The Left Student Organisation demanded high-resolution cameras with good night vision capabilities. They suggested the cameras should be installed in such a way that they can cover critical areas outside colleges, like poorly lit pathways, parking lots, and student corners.

Amid this RSS-AISA clash and SFI protests students and their studies are getting sacrificed. Undoubtedly the issues are important, but it should be done in a systematic way. The college authorities can also be blamed for entertaining such disruptions in the campus. What are your thoughts regarding the matter? Do you think that the situation would be much easier if the authorities were awake? Share your thoughts in the comment.

The Institute of Chartered Accountants of India (ICAI) will conduct the CA Inter and Final examinations as per the scheduled dates. The Delhi High Court has dismissed the petition of the students who were seeking postponement of the exams. Few days back, a group of 27 students filed a petition in Delhi High Court to reschedule the ICAI CA Inter and Final examinations. Their claim was, due to the upcoming Lok Sabha Elections, students will face logistical problems. But Delhi High Court has rejected their plea and exams will be conducted on the aforesaid dates.

ICAI

The Argument of the Petitioners

Delhi HC

The petitioners argued that transportation and other logistical machinery will be used in elections. This can be disadvantageous and hectic for students appearing for the exams.

Court’s Judgment

However, the court held the view that there is no ‘legal impediment’ to conducting examinations during elections. The bench emphasized that there is a huge number of aspiring Chartered Accountants (approximately 426,000) who are preparing to appear in the exam. Rescheduling exams at this 11th hour may cause problems for them. Therefore the Honorable Court expressed disapproval of the request. They also stated that the mere possibility of hardship cannot be a reason to delay the exams.

Exam Dates

The ICAI had previously acknowledged the potential impact of the elections and adjusted the examination schedule accordingly. Here’s a breakdown of the revised schedule:

 CA Inter:

Group I: May 3rd, 5th, and 9th, 2024    Group II: May 11th, 15th, and 17th

 CA Final:

Group I: May 2nd, 4th, and 8th, 2024

Group II: May 10th, 14th, and 16th

International Taxation – Assessment Test: May 14th and 16th, 2024. As per ICAI schedule, CA Foundation course examination will be conducted in June 2024. So it will not be affected by elections.

A Clearer Picture Emerges

This development is very important from the students’ perspective. Amid all the confusion, it gives clarity about the specific dates of the examination. Students who are preparing diligently are advised to continue their studies as exams will be conducted on their aforesaid dates. For those who may still have concerns regarding transport, are advised to chalk it out as soon as possible. It is very possible that due to the election anyone can face logistical problems, so making necessary arrangements is a must. For further updates students are suggested to visit ICAI website regularly and stay updated. Are you also preparing for ICAI exams? What are your thoughts and how prepared are you? Let us know in the comments.
