The National Students’ Union of India (NSUI) on August 27, 2018, Monday released it’s manifesto for the upcoming Delhi University Students’ Union (DUSU) polls, to be held on September 12, with the punchline “#DUSpeakUp”, focussing on a fight for the ‘‘Institution of Eminence” tag and “Students Rights Commission”, an affordable and women-friendly campus.

The manifesto promises free laptops, Rs 10 food-plate in canteens, subsidised accommodation, more hostels and a campaign to identify and groom 100 women leaders from the varsity.

NSUI’s National President, Fairoz Khan, said they will spot potential women leaders from the university, who under a programme will be mentored by former Delhi Chief Minister, Sheila Dixit.

Listing it’s achievements over the past year, the NSUI said that it ran a successful “#TakeBackDU” campaign by winning two of the central seats. The NSUI said it had also asked the DU authorities to make public how DUSU had spent funds over the past year so that students could judge the use of funds they had all contributed to.

It indeed, seems to be a promising manifest.

“To live is to choose. But to choose well, you must know who you are and what you stand for, where you want to go and why you want to get there.” – Kofi Annan

These wise words were spoken by a great leader and influencer, Kofi Annan. Kofi Annan was born in Kumasi, Ghana, on 8 April 1938. He was a Noble peace prize winner for his humanitarian work and United Nations Secretary. He used to describe himself as a ‘stubborn optimist’. Kofi Annan, who has died aged 80, brought strong moral convictions and careful judgment.

Annan was a firm believer in multilateral solutions, but also recognised that the UN had to be revitalised and streamlined, and its purposes redefined to respond to the challenges of globalisation. He had his focus on eliminating poverty in the developing world. His personality was a combination of self-assurance, self-control and unpretentiousness. Unlike the previous holders of the secretary general’s office, Annan was a classic insider who had spent his entire working life within the UN system.

Annan worked in the areas of development and the maintenance of international peace and security; advocating human rights, the rule of law and the universal values of equality, tolerance and human dignity. Mr Annan’s efforts to strengthen the Organisation’s management, coherence and accountability involved major investments in training and technology, the introduction of a new whistleblower policy and financial disclosure requirements, and steps to improve co-ordination at country level. In the end I would like to say that he was a great leader and a teacher that we’ve lost.

He spoke some very wise words, some of them being;
“Knowledge is power. Information is liberating. Education is the premise of progress, in every society, in every family.”

Delhi University, it’s not just a bunch of colleges it’s rather a home to thousands of students. The university accepts you, moulds you and makes you better in numerous ways.

When I say it’s a home to students, I mean a home to people from different cultures, states and even countries. You’d meet people from various backgrounds and learn from them about their culture and tell some about yours. This broadens our mind as an individual to know how people vary so much within a nation. It helps us grow and develop a better understanding.

This inter-cultural transfer is very helpful for a growing student. It gives us a different perspective and makes us respect every belief. By letting students from all over the country and even from other countries enrol, colleges promote and instil equality. They provide equal opportunity to develop and become something to each one of us, it’s on us how we use it to our best abilities.

All of us at the DU family are indeed, divided by boundaries and United by Delhi University.
