Is it a level playing field?

Recently RCI has published a new notification declaring that a new course named B.Sc. in psychology shall be introduced. It will prevail for 4 years duration. Students after pursuing this degree shall get the license to practice as counselling psychologists and will also get an RCI registration number. It is one of the revolutionary and somewhat controversial notifications from RCI as a community of psychologists are viewing it with speculation.

Traditionally being a psychologist is a very lengthy process. First one has to get a bachelor’s in psychology, or this should be one of the disciplines in bachelors. Thereafter one is expected to pursue a master’s in it and then either an M.Phil. or psy D will allow one to be a psychologist after recognition from RCI. Now providing the license to practice just after graduation in order to fulfil the ratio to population is raising questions about this decision.

No concern for humanities

Psychology is not completely science. It is considered a mixture of science and humanities. Thus, students from both streams are allowed to pursue psychology as a career. However, after this notification, a student after class 10th will have two options. Either one chooses the science stream to get the license in four years or one can select humanities to go through the traditional way.

Thus, the most promising method here is the first one. It, therefore, shows no concern for humanities students as they still have to follow the traditional method, however, this is not the same for students of science background. This will lead to generations of psychologists from science who can outnumber those who have humanities. Here psychologists view that it must be equal for both streams as psychology is an interdisciplinary subject. A person with no knowledge of social and political aspects will shrink this discipline with a single shade thereby pushing students from the arts into an inferiority complex in this discipline.

Ambiguity regarding the present status of the psychologist

Considering those practitioners who have just graduated as equivalent to those who have cracked the traditional process and providing them with RCI registration numbers is something controversial. Although it is necessary to fulfil the psychologist a population ratio, this is raising ambiguity here. Questions such as, “What will be the future status of counseling psychologist who is already practising?”, “What will the way for humanities students to get the same license?” is still inside the box.

Way forward

Thus, it is high time that the WE must make the process of reforms inclusive and transparent. Following are the expectations from RCI while making such policies: –

  1. The policy formation process should also include the members who will be affected through this process
  2.  Humanities students should equally get a chance towards getting an RCI license through a similar course to provide level playing field
  3. The ambiguity regarding the present status of psychologists must be cleared. There must be transparency in the process

Thus, in a nutshell, we shall conclude that policy formation is a complex task. While making such revolutionary policies, one must have a bird’s eye. We must consider all these aspects while making such decisions where the level playing field can be affected.

The major problem in psychology at DU

It can easily be observed that the majority of the colleges are women’s colleges providing seats for psychology.  It means for males there are only three options to choose from Aryabhatta College, Kesav Mahavidyalaya, and Zakir Hussain College. So, it narrows our limits for male students to choose from which college they want to pursue the degree.

Thus, there is an urgent need for Delhi University must increase the choices of male students too who want to pursue a degree in psychology. Recently Du has been working on the construction of its west and east campuses too which is a ray of hope to have multiple choices while filling out the preference sheet in DU.

Self is the understanding of all the conscious thoughts, ideas and experiences in respect to an individual. In this rat race, what we need the most is understanding of our own selves. There’s a need to understand that all the human beings differ from each other on the basis of various attributes. Rather than making comparisons, one should try to identify strong and productive differences between individuals.       Self

Talking about the mental health would be so far if we are not able to recognise our own potentials, capabilities, desires and choices.

How can we recognise ourselves?

1) Personal Identity : it is a group of factors that make one different from others. For instance, one would have been honest and hardworking while the other would have been a believer in fate and destiny.

2) Social Identity : it refers to the social and cultural aspects of an individual to which he/she is linked to. For instance, one might be Indian while the other would have been American.

In both the identities there are different and contrasting aspects and characteristics which might be present in the varying individuals. Only the need is to identify our own features and ourselves. Then we cling to our personal and social identities and feel safe about it to remain stable with us in our lifetime.

Once we become familiar with our inner strengths and weaknesses, then we would be eligible for helping ourselves as well as others in any mental or emotional crisis.

In our day-to-day life, it becomes quite confusing to identify any sort of mental issues going on in an individual. So, why do we either wait for seeing the symptoms for any health issues?

Keep talking, keep sharing, be humble, and develop faith in others as well as in yourselves.

It has been said that in kaliyug both surrah(surs) and assurah(assurs) reside in a single body. If a person or family is too good or virtuous then there are possibilities for the same to carry an extremely dark side. Only the difference is that we as a human being try to overcome our dark and negative side by a good cover. To conform with the societal norms, we resist accepting our true selves. The fear of getting discriminated by the society and it’s people force us to comply with it’s norms and ideals.

How does it affect us?

The word “pseudo” best suits this condition. By denying our actual thoughts and characteristics and complying with the popular notions make us a “pseudo-human”. It in turn affects the self-esteem and self-concepts of an individual. According to Carl Rogers, self-concept is an overarching construct that self-esteem is one of the components of it. Science and tradition

Be it a tradition (as mentioned above) or a science, both focus on the well-being of an individual through direct relationship with self-esteem and self-concepts.

Undermine or Overcome?

The moral and the values that one carries plays a vital role in their development. A set of proper ideologies and ethics that are present in an individual, guides him/her. These ethics are received by one through the family backgrounds. Thus, helps in overcoming a negative side and thoughts of an individual rather than just undermining it for a moment.

Undermining a condition would suppress the reality for a while but overcoming it with internal and external factors would completely change the reality.

The purpose of an individual should be to transform oneself from evil to good rather than just suppressing one’s beliefs and characteristics. Consequently, it would enforce one to accept or mould the reality.
