The Delhi University has been ranked ‘A+’ in the NAAC review with a 3.8 CGPA. The review was held in the last week of October. The council’s grading is crucial as it is important for grants & funds alloted the varsity by the Univeristy Grants Commission (UGC).

The accreditation is as per the revised A&A Framework launched by NAAC in July 2017. The aim was to make it more ICT enabled, objective, transparent, scalable and robust. The primary focus of the shift is from qualitative peer judgment to data-based quantitative indicator evaluation with increased objectivity and transparency. These include combination of online evaluation (about 70 per cent) and peer judgment (about 30 per cent).

Before NAAC team’s visit, the varsity’s mock testing teams conducted visits to departments to check if they’re prepared for the actual review. A questionnaire containing 108 questions was sent to various department heads in this regard.

The questionnaire included questions such as, do they celebrate national festivals, observe birth & death anniversaries of great Indian personalities, Is there a policy to check plagiarism, among others.

The accreditation is valid for a period of 5 years, starting from November 30, 2018. The University is looking forward to a better grade of  ‘A++’ which falls between 3.51 to 4. Last year, Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) was ranked with ‘A++’ in the NAAC review.

Telangana writer Prof. Kancha Ilaiah said that murders of Dalits are caste hatred killings and the term “honour” should not be used. He says,” Why are caste-based murders being labelled as honour killings?” Dalits are being killed for their caste so these are caste hatred killings and they should be called that,’” said Ilaiah.

Ilaiah said that caste-based discrimination and killings should become an election issue in Telangana.

All of it started when a dalit man, P Pranay Kumar was hacked to death in Telangana by his father-in-law, for marrying an upper caste woman. Ilaiah said that caste-based discrimination and killings should be election issues in Telangana, because notably, hundreds of activists and members of human rights organizations have visited Pranay’s home in Miryalaguda to console his pregnant wife Amrutha, and family. The security had to be tightened outside Pranay’s house in Mutthireddykunta, as agitated members of Dalit organizations raised slogans calling to fight against the caste discrimination.

Meanwhile, Amrutha Varshini and her in-laws today requested a fast-track court to be set up to take up the murder case of Pranay.

M.Phil and PhD Admissions: Admissions in M.Phil and Ph.d courses in DU will start from next week. Recently, it was made mandatory to score atleast 50% in the entrance exam of these courses which was followed by protests. Due to this, most of the seats went vacant as very few students were able to fulfill this criteria. Consequently, interviews were also postponed as no OBC, SC, ST belonging to some departments qualified the criterion.

Pami Dua in the notice said, “A relaxation of 5% marks (from 50% to 45%) shall be allowed for candidates belonging to SC/ST/OBC and differently abled categories in the entrance exam” But in case te students don’t fulfill the criteria, a relaxation of 5 percent would be provided, and if still the seats remain vacant then, these departments will explore suitable policies to fill the vacant seats.
