Gir Forests sees increase in population of Asiatic lions. Finally something good in 2020; something to cheer for the environmentalists. The Gir Forests, Gujarat records an increase of 29 % in the population of the Asiatic lions. Furthermore, the population of the lions have increased tremendously in last 5 years. The number has increased from 523 in year 2015 to 674 in 2020.

Gir Forests Sees Record Increase in Population of Asiatic Lions in last 5 years

Moreover, this period also witnessed an increase in the distribution region of lions. This increase was recorded as 36 % than before. While it was 22,000 sq km in 2015, it is now 30,000 sq km.

The Asiatic lions are found in the region of Saurashtra. Further, they cover a total of 9 districts in the state of Gujarat. They are found in protected and agro-pastoral areas of the region. The state has noticed continuous rise in the number of lions. The same has been enabled due to community participation, improvement in technology, etc. Other reasons behind the success are proper management, healthcare. Moreover, right steps were taken to preserve the lions in the state. The same has also happened because of less human-lion conflicts.

Prime Minister, Narendra Modi came forward and tweeted regarding the same. He further hoped to keep the trend going.

This years’ growth can be recorded as one of the highest in recent years. Last year too witnessed an increase in population of Asiatic lions in the Gir Forests.

This data of increase in population is compiled under “Poonam Avlokan of Asiatic Lions”. It is an exercise held by Gujarat Forest Department. 1400 members were deployed by forest department. These personnels use GPS location. Further, individual identification marks, radio-collar numbers are also used. This population estimation of Asiatic lions is conducted in the country in every 5 years.

After a long protest against OBE (Open Book Examination) by teachers and students, Delhi University and HRD Ministry gave a thumbs up to OBE. Due to the rapid increase in the number of COVID-19 cases, it was risky for the University to conduct an exam physically so for the safety of the students HRD Ministry gave Delhi University permission of conducting online examination. Now, DU decided to take OBE for students registered under the final year/semester exam of any UG or PG course. Previous students can also appear for improvement exams whereas students of 1st and 2nd year of Regular/SOL/NCWEB have been promoted based on marks of internals or previous semester.
DU recently gave some guidelines regarding OBE to the students and notified them to give some extra benefits to differently-abled students. Now they have decided to give 5 Hours to differently-abled students to complete OBE. In addition to that students who don’t have e-resources and are going to appear in examination from CSC (Common Service Centres) are allowed to bring their scribes to their respective centers.
University asked to take care of Social distancing and follow all the other guidelines given by the Government regarding Covid-19.

As the nation-wide lockdown has been extended by 30 days more by the government in the evening, students need to check when they’ll be back to school and their college.

On the evening of 30 May 2020, the home ministry has released the rules and regulations for lockdown 5.0. The rules have been according to the phases.

Phase 1: In phase 1 all religious places in the town will be reopened with hotels and restaurants. The opening of shopping malls is also expected by the 8th of June. Wearing masks and sanitizing will remain mandatory.
Phase 2: The government has indicated that schools and colleges will be opened in the second phase. The decision will be in consultation with the State government. And the government has advised the State Governments/UT administrations to take advice from parents and stakeholders at an institutional level. The decision of opening schools, coaching, and other educational centers will be based on the feedback of the parents. And the feedback session will be done in July. So as mentioned earlier, colleges and schools are likely to be reopened on the 15th of July.

By the recent update on exam conduction, its clear that decision on first and second year is still pending but the tentative schedule for third years is released. And CBSE Board exams for grade 12 students, for reaming 29 subjects papers will be beginning from July first week in their own schools respectively.

The government also released the guidelines on the functioning of these activities:

The intra-state and inter-state movement prohibition have been removed completely. Now the movement is blocked from midnight from 9 pm to 5 am. Between these hours, if required then only emergency vehicle will be moving. Movement is free for the rest of the time.


Metro Rail and international air services will be resumed from June 1. Cinema halls, Gymnasium, swimming, and entertainment parks services will too resume from June 1. All these activities are included in phase three and will be opening soon after the consultation of health ministry guidelines.
Nothing will be open in containment zones. However lockdown shall continue to be implemented, also these areas will be under the guidance of States and UTs, in light of their evaluation of the circumstance, may forbid certain activities outside the containment zones, or force limitations as esteemed vital, the new rules state.

West Bengal faced Wednesday evening winds speed of 130kmph. Later it turned into heavy rains which led to waterlogging in the state. Due to Cyclone Amphan nearly12 people have lost their lives reported by Mamta Banarjee in a video meeting. Cyclone affected many districts including the capital Kolkata. CM said in the session that cyclone has hit the state on an unexpected scale, she requested to Prime Minister for help.

She added that the communication system has been lost and the exact number is lost as information is not reaching the secretariat. The situation in the East has been destroyed in a manner that loss here is more than the country facing because of COVID-19. The city last time faced drastic cyclone ‘bulbul’, in the year 2019.

CONDITIONS and SUFFERINGS 

Super cyclone has hit 99% of South Parganas, around 1000 of tress got uprooted. There are areas where the administration has not reached yet. Mamta Banarjee requested people to not leave camps and shelters.

Deputy Mayor Atin Ghosh said, “We have all our units working. There are at least 36 teams present in KMC, while all boroughs have separate teams. It is a damage that looks manageable now. It will take time”.

PM SAID 

PM Modi tweets: “Have been seeing visuals from West Bengal on the devastation caused by Cyclone Amphan. In this challenging hour, the entire nation stands in solidarity with West Bengal. Praying for the well-being of the people of the state. Efforts are on to ensure normalcy. NDRF teams are working in the cyclone-affected parts. Top officials are closely monitoring the situation and also working in close coordination with the West Bengal government. No stone will be left unturned in helping the affected.”

CENTRE of CYCLONE 

Bangladesh has also got affected by this cyclone. It has been updated that the center of this cyclone in Bangladesh.

No doubt the cyclone has hit the state physically as well as economically. We request the Centre and other states to reach out for help. We together pray and will reach them for their betterment.
