What are you fighting for?

The corporate world and our education sector are full of competition. The number of seats available in the education sector for medical and engineering demands stiff competition among students to win the seats. Similarly, promotion in the corporate sector is based on performance compared with others. Then this is considered as a basis for whom the promotion will be provided. Thus, there is a hoax of a rat race created in society to get ahead of others to be called as achievers.

Although psychologists claim that competition is necessary for a healthy life, it has its limits. How healthy is your competition? How much is this rat race helping you to be yourself in life? What are the ways to prevent unhealthy competition in the workplace? Also, the most fundamental questions include how necessary is competition for cognitive and economic development and what the ways to get away from the unhealthy repercussions of these unhealthy competitions. This blog shall deal with the fundamental aspects of competition that exist here in our immediate environment.

Healthy v/s unhealthy competition

We can classify the competition into two fundamental categories. Healthy and unhealthy competition. Healthy competition on the one hand is a kind of competition where the goal is to upskill oneself by learning from others. When the defeat is not a matter of life and death rather it is just the means of improvement. A kind of rat race where inferiority or superiority complex does not have a significant place in the improvement of the person.

However, on the other hand, competition where the main aim is to defeat others leads to generations of unhealthy competition. This kind of competition leads to the creation of an extremely negative environment in society.   Nowadays the education sector and the corporate sector are gradually moving towards being war zones. The increasing rate of the unhealthy rat race is something very alarming in society which has its significant ramifications.

Repercussions of Unhealthy Rat Race

Unhealthy competitions have several repercussions that are apparent in a variety of contexts. These can be summarized as: –

  1. It affects the mental health of students in a very negative manner. To develop interest in any discipline it is necessary to avoid the over-justification effect among students. This is a term used in social psychology here the intrinsic motivation to do a work tends to deteriorate when it is accompanied by external rewards and punishment. The unhealthy competitions lead to the development of inferiority and superiority complex among students which tend to decrease their intrinsic motivation for academics
  2. It leads to a problem of labelling of individuals. If someone tends to perform well in any task or competition, we tend to label the person as per the performance. This affects one’s self-concept and to bring congruity here, it impacts future performance too
  3. The talents which couldn’t be demonstrated in any particular test get under the vain which leads to loss of talents.
  4. Unhealthy competitions are a threat to fraternity in the organization if defeating one’s colleague becomes the goal.
  5. Failure creates a lot of pressure on oneself when one’s ego fails to defend oneself. Thus, it has ramifications in terms of the mental health of individuals. Also, it tends to provide the incorrect basis for judgement of oneself

Cases of loss due to unhealthy competition

  1. The deaths in Kota due to suicides are apparent examples of the negative repercussions of unhealthy rat race. Where children of 15-16 years find it difficult to stand in the complex social structure where the battle to prove oneself continues.
  2. As many as 12 intermediate students committed suicide in April 2023 after the declaration of the examination results. The increase in suicide among youths between 14 to 18 years of age has extracted major concerns for the education department.
  3. A news report reported that “7 lakh suicides occurring worldwide each year, quite a significant number comprises India’s youngsters — suicide is the leading cause of death among those aged 15 to 30 here.”

Ways to avoid unhealthy rat race

  1. Foster relationships: – Try to form healthy relationships among your peers. This will just label the competition as a part of your job. Thereby making it easier for you to deal with the competition when you tend to value the relationship more than the competition
  2. Try to focus on self-improvement. You need to consider that the main goal of the competition is your improvement rather than your victory.
  3. Consider failure as a way of improvement. It is normal for humans to fail. Thus, please consider failure as just the way of improvement rather than as an attack on the ego.
  4. One match won’t make u unsuccessful. There is always a way forward. Thus, irrespective of the history please focus on future opportunities. Optimism acts as a barrier to unhealthy rat race

Thus, in a nutshell, we can conclude that competition plays a vital role in our development when it is healthy. Otherwise, if it becomes a matter of life and death or self-respect then we shall see many Kotas in future. Thus, our institutions must educate their members regarding the ways of competition. Thus, competition on a limited scale is necessary for the holistic development of individuals.

Collective aegis of the University of Delhi and Vikas Bharat Ambassador Club is going to organize a Viksit Bharat run on May 8. This run shall be of 2.4km and nearly 5000 Delhi University students are going to participate in the run. Here students will aim to create awareness regarding their vision of a developed nation by 2047.

Delhi University Vice Chancellor Yogesh Singh will be the chief guest of the event. A meeting to outline the preparations for the event was held under the chairmanship of DU registrar Vikas Gupta.

Gupta mentioned, “The run will be flagged off from gate number one of the university at 7 am on May 8 and will conclude at the sports complex of the university at gate number four. About 5,000 students from different colleges will participate in the 2.4-kilometer run.” Thus this blog shall provide all necessary details regarding the run.

The objective of the run

The main objective of the run will be to create awareness regarding the motto of the government to make India a developed nation by 2047. For this Indian government in the past few years has initiated a lot of projects aimed at the holistic development of the nation. This run by students will indicate the contribution of youth energy in making India a developed nation.

This will not only encourage the fitness of youth but also will help to spread the message of the equal contribution of every member to make India proud.

Controversy regarding timings here?

Delhi University here claims that this has nothing to do with elections and is just an initiative to motivate students. However, professors such as Maya John in Delhi University’s academic council have questioned the timing of events ahead of elections. As the model code of conduct is on grounds, she is dissatisfied with the timings here.

Despite deliberations, the announcement is with the goal of student welfare and creating awareness regarding the vision of visiting Bharat.

How to participate?

Gupta said, “We have sent invitations to colleges to participate in the run”. Thus it will get updated in respective colleges the method of participation in the run. This could mean that colleges will use various methods to encourage participation, such as sending out emails, making announcements, or posting on social media. They might also set up internal coordination to manage their participants. Also to ensure everyone is aware of the event’s logistics, like the registration process, event timing, and location. Ultimately, the invitation will act as a catalyst for colleges to start rallying their communities. Also driving engagement with the upcoming run. The exact procedure will duly be cleared by the time.

Conclusion

Thus it can be concluded that students of Delhi University students will participate in the run on 8th May to create awareness. This shall be a novel initiative to facilitate students to participate actively in the process amid this controversy. This will highlight all the visions and initiatives of the government to make India a developed nation till 2047.

Student’s Aspirations on this Election

The biggest festival of democracy: the “election process” has started. All over India, it is apparent to see leaders again campaigning with a basket of their promises. Thus, this election brings out novel problems, demands, and aspirations.

This is an acceptable fact that students of higher education form a considerable amount of vote bank for leaders. Thus, it becomes necessary for leaders as well as voters to have a look at what the present demands and expectations of students are in this Lok Sabha elections. Also, how Can we make this country a better place to live?

Those who visualize the vital role of government in the development of the country must have the moral responsibility to know their demands. Every responsible citizen of India must vote for their country, no matter what their choices are. Only the active participation of citizens in politics can showcase our spirit of democracy.

From students’ eyes, this election has a direct relation with their future. Especially in the field of higher education and employment demands, the leader-citizen connection is gradually becoming an intimate relation. This election following are the aspirations of students:

1. More seats in government educational institutions:

One of the biggest aspirations that students hold is to increase their seats in government institutions. This will make the institutions more inclusive and will provide a level playing field for all students who aspire to study there. This is especially true in the case of medical and engineering candidates where market demand and supply both can be high. The need is if we get the proper infrastructure to aspire to our dreams, this will provide us with wings to fly.

WHO mentions that India needs 1.8 million doctors in India to deal with total medical demands. Every year there are a total of 3,39,125 enrollments in NEET. It means that they are willing to be in the medical field. Thus, proper infra and seats in the discipline tend to meet this demand through our knowledge economy. In a similar way in all disciplines, there is a need to provide a good quantity and quality of education for our overall development.

2. Proper infrastructure in government institutions: –

Although there is a pretty good development in the case of infrastructure in government institutions, their depreciation is one of the biggest problems. It is the need of an hour that proper awareness should be there regarding infrastructure depreciation. Also, the depreciated appliance must be replaced with immediate action to provide a valuable learning experience.

3. Need for mental health professionals in the education sector: –

It is a unanimously acceptable fact that academic and other pressures create a lot of mental health problems for students. It is very normal to face this problem, but the real problem lies in the lack of appropriate mental health professionals in the education sector. One prominent psychologist Mr. Misra once said, “There is a need to provide appropriate positions to psychologists in India wherever required. The research here must not be mere replication of West.”  A report from India Today quoted that, “There is a need for 15 lakh counselors for 315 million students.” Thus, it is an urgent need of era to fill this gap of mental health professionals

4. To increase the placement rate: –

To build a safe and healthy future, most students, after a lot of hard work, demand good placement. Thus, whoever the leader is must ensure that it is very important to take care of the placements of students enrolled in their institutions. The reason is at the end of the day they are being added to the total employment rate of the country

5. To encourage sports in the present education system: –

India has a huge sports potential in its students. The medals won and accreditations are proof of our potential. The need is to foster potential by providing opportunities in the field of sports. Students with their sports abilities require appropriate infrastructure, training, counseling, and support from the government to perform miraculously. The government’s policy of Khleo India must be implemented effectively for the holistic development of students.

6. Start up the friendly environment: –

Students of this country have the dream of making this country a start-up-friendly zone. This will not only help in the creation of employment in the nation but also will help to foster the dreams of individuals to make their own company. India is full of startup capacity; the need is for funding and guidance. The government’s start-up India program must target these two components to encourage entrepreneurs from all sections of society to have their venture.

Thus, in a nutshell, we must say that in this election it is our moral responsibility to think rationally and then vote. Our vote matters in deciding the pathway that our country will uphold. Please make sure that your voter ID is with you. Have a good and rational analysis of each candidate and let’s vote together to make this Bharat ‘Viksit Bharat’.

Recently UPSC CSE results have been published and as usual, it can be observed that 2 Delhi University alumina are in the top 5 rankings. Donuru Ananya Reddy of Telangana’s Mahabubnagar, who studied at Miranda House, secured the third rank, while Ruhani, a Gurugram resident who attended St Stephen’s, ranked fifth.

Also, overall, Aditya Srivastava secured 1st rank, Animesh Kumar got 2nd rank and PK Sidharth Ramkumar got the 3rd rank. This is not a very surprising fact because it is every year’s trend that Delhi University has a history of providing civil servants of India.

The question is what is the magic spell in DU that facilitates the budding civil servants to fight in real life? What makes civil service the most demanded career? What is needed to be a civil servant? How long is the journey? How Du is in the field? In this Blog, all your questions will be resolved fluidly.

What is making DU a UPSC hub?

We know Delhi University for its diversity. As a fact, civil service examinations are considered the most prominent examination not only in DU but also all over India. The platform to serve and a well-settled and respectful life are the fascinating aspects that attract lakhs of aspirants from all over the world to attend civil service examinations. But there is a magic spell in Du that every year it can be observed that many Alunnis of Du are the present civil servants.

Civil services do require a set of qualities that need to be developed. Any quality can be developed through an environment that one is getting, and DU can provide that environment

DU college campus is full of diversity. Students from all over India do exist there and that helps the students to adapt themselves in a diverse environment. There are thousands of societies working on college campuses that help in the holistic development of students and increase their skills. The faculty also contains experts as many Ph.D. D holders generally have a dream to get into DU as a professor. This makes DU a fascinating place. The platform is here and if you have the capability, take it!

How to be a civil servant?

Honestly, I am not a civil servant thus I have no say here. But let’s examine the direction that the words of rank holders suggest and what upsc cse proposes.

To be a civil servant first you need to prepare for the examinations😁. In the process of preparation, you will get to know that there are three parts of the exams which extend up to a year. These are prelims, mains, and interviews. After clearing each level of this examination, you will be allotted a rank and a cut-off.

This cutoff will decide whether you have succeeded or not. This examination will not only provide you with a way towards a fulfilled life but also the platform through which you can directly connect with the administration to serve your country. What every successful civil servant claims that “Consistency “was the mantra that helped them.

There are a lot of struggles that this exam will give you. You must fight with aspirants all over the country but cracking this exam is a good experience. What DU will give you here is a platform for improvement. It will teach what hard work is.  Therefore, it would not be wrong to say that DU is moving towards its transformation to a UPSC hub.

How much is the success rate?

Approximately 0.2 percent of total aspirants get success in the examinations. All aspirants do not stand on the same boat but what combines them is their hard work and struggle. All of you of course will not achieve success. But those of you who learned to deal with the hard work, believe me, success won’t wait for you.

It is your journey as it is your life. If you have an aspiration to do something, if you are the one who believes in the stable flame of life and wants to live life to the fullest, this is the attempt you must not miss. I wish you all the best for your journey. Crack the exam and make your life fulfilled.
