Late on Friday night, there was a fight at Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) in Delhi. It happened between two groups of students – one called ABVP and the other connected to the Left. They were having a meeting to choose people for the student elections. Both groups said some of their members got hurt.

JNU Clash Between ABVP and Leftist Groups

This fight took place during a meeting at the Sabarmati Dhaba on the campus. The meeting was about picking members for the Election Commission for the 2024 JNUSU elections. The Left group, DSF, said ABVP students disrupted the meeting by causing trouble and not letting it happen peacefully.

Videos on social media showed students arguing loudly, and security had to come in to calm things down.

The DSF accused ABVP of working with the administration to stop the meeting from happening. They said it was an attempt to stop the fair process of elections.

The Students’ Federation of India said ABVP students attacked the JNUSU president, Aishe Ghosh.

ABVP said it was actually the Left group who started the fight. They said Left students tried to disturb the meeting because they didn’t want it to happen. ABVP said they tried to stop the disruptions, but it led to a fight.

The situation got worse as ABVP accused the Left group of starting trouble after they couldn’t stop the meeting.

A lot of students had come to Sabarmati Dhaba for the meeting. Earlier in the day, enough students had agreed to have the meeting, so it could start.

The RSS-affiliated student organisation Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP), on Friday, May 15, 2020, submitted a memorandum of demands on examination modes to the University of Delhi’s Vice-Chancellor Yogesh Kumar Tyagi.

ABVP submits a memorandum

On Thursday, the University said it might opt for online ‘open book’ examinations in case the situation arising due to the coronavirus outbreak does not normalise. In response to this, the ABVP expressed displeasure pertaining to the fact that very little time was given for discussion with stakeholders, and only one alternative mode was suggested, the student organisation said in a statement. It recommended extensive dialogues with all the stakeholders for a suitable and satisfactory solution.

Further, the student body suggested that more and more options should be given to the students in terms of course to be evaluated, mode of evaluation, and questions to be answered. Students should only be assessed for only that part of the syllabus which had been completed during classroom teaching, it added. The ABVP also demanded that composite evaluation methods like assignments, viva voce, projects, MCQs, etc., should be explored in order to solve this issue.

Many students have left the national capital in the mid-semester break without their study materials and so the varsity must make provision to provide them the resource material soon, the ABVP said. According to them, students in their final semesters should be evaluated with conventional methods, if possible, or with innovative feasible options and those of intermediate years should be promoted.

A senior official of ABVP said, “Even if it is not abolised, we will request the voters to vote for any candidate of their choice instead of opting for NOTA!”
ABVP against NOTA
It seems as a reaction of BJPs poor poll show in the post elections in various states. Although, ABVP called it as a step in the larger interest of democracy!
With the slogan of “Nation First,  Voting Must! “,  ABVP is all set to start the nationwide campaign against NOTA.
The decision was taken in the post national session held by ABVP.

ABVP’s DUSU President Ankiv Baisoya was suspended from the organization pending an enquiry into his alleged fake marksheet.
Baisoya had secured admission in MA Buddhist Studies in July, and submitted BA marksheets from Tamil Nadu’s Thiruvalluvar University (TU) as qualifying certificates. He was elected as the DUSU president on September 13.
Soon after the polls, the NSUI alleged that he had submitted fake certificates.
The Thiruvallar University registrar also stated that Baisoya was neither enrolled in the varsity nor in any of its constituent or affiliated colleges. As soon as DU was yet to complete its probe in the matter by 20th Nov as per the orders of the High Court, ABVP’s Ankiv Baisoya himself resigned from the post and has also been suspended from ABVP organization.

Yesterday, ABVP tweeted “ABVP has been known for taking strict actions, unlike other organisations.
We thereby suspend Ankiv Baisoya from the organization till the inquiry is going in. We have also asked him to leave his post of DUSU President.”
Also, the same was confirmed by Ankiv Baisoya’s Facebook post.

Although,  the inquiry and high court verdict on the same is yet to come.

In response to this today, AISA and NSUI held a Joint Press Conference over his fake degree case controversial suspension from ABVP.

“It’s strange and shameful that the ABVP was in deep slumber for an entire two months period and woken up suddenly when the court’s judgement is at doors. ABVP is a perfect example of ruling and capturing power by all undemocratic means.” said AISA’s Kawal Preet Kaur.

“Now, We demand mainly two possibilities from DU Admin, either the President Runner up, Sunny Chillar made President under section 101 of the Representation of People’s Act 1951 or call for a Fresh Elections declaring nomination of Ankiv Baisoya null and void as he was never a student of the University. Also, strict criminal action against Ankiv Baisoya.” said, Ruchi Gupta AICC Joint Secretary and National Incharge, NSUI.

NSUI’s DUSU Secretary called it as ‘Institutional Capture’ by the RSS-BJP as DU admin deliberately tried to delay cancellation of Ankiv Baisoya’s admission to pass the 2 month period stipulated by Lyngdoh Guidelines for fresh elections. Also, he submitted a memorandum on the same to Delhi University Vice Chancellor today.

ABVP’s statement on the same is awaited.

After the resignation of Fairoz Khan from the National President’s post of NSUI over the allegations of sexual harassment. Another name blooming over the Congress student wing as an aspirant of ‘To be appointed National President’ is Karishma Thakur from Kanpur, UP currently holding the post of National General Secretary of NSUI. She has been a dedicated and passionate leader over the years. She has been the Secretary in DUSU 2012-13 who won with a huge margin leaving behind all the stereotypes of ‘dominance of Jaat-Gujjar candidates in DUSU’. Coming from a small state, she made Delhi University her very own place. She is a graduate from Lakshmibai College, Delhi University and is currently pursuing LLB from Law Faculty. The young talented woman was also in news in past days as she got injured in DUSU Elections in a spat with ABVP Activists.

National President of Congress Student Wing, NSUI

The appointment of National President of NSUI will no doubt be a clueless decision but the name prevailing amongst the NSUI activists is Karishma Thakur. Also, it has been the legacy of the Congress to give space and position of responsibility to the young talent!
