Late on Friday night, there was a fight at Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) in Delhi. It happened between two groups of students – one called ABVP and the other connected to the Left. They were having a meeting to choose people for the student elections. Both groups said some of their members got hurt.

JNU Clash Between ABVP and Leftist Groups

This fight took place during a meeting at the Sabarmati Dhaba on the campus. The meeting was about picking members for the Election Commission for the 2024 JNUSU elections. The Left group, DSF, said ABVP students disrupted the meeting by causing trouble and not letting it happen peacefully.

Videos on social media showed students arguing loudly, and security had to come in to calm things down.

The DSF accused ABVP of working with the administration to stop the meeting from happening. They said it was an attempt to stop the fair process of elections.

The Students’ Federation of India said ABVP students attacked the JNUSU president, Aishe Ghosh.

ABVP said it was actually the Left group who started the fight. They said Left students tried to disturb the meeting because they didn’t want it to happen. ABVP said they tried to stop the disruptions, but it led to a fight.

The situation got worse as ABVP accused the Left group of starting trouble after they couldn’t stop the meeting.

A lot of students had come to Sabarmati Dhaba for the meeting. Earlier in the day, enough students had agreed to have the meeting, so it could start.

M. Jagdish Kumar, The VC of Jawaharlal Nehru University on Monday told Press Trust of India(PTI) that varsity has bagged a project on COVID-19 research from BIRAC, a public sector enterprise set up by the Department of Biotechnology.

The Biotechnology Industry Research Assistance Council (BIRAC) gave permission to JNU to develop a low-cost portable microfluidic embedded on chip RT-PCR and micro electrode array coupled point-of care optoelectronic device for large-scale screening of emerging viral disease like SARS-CoV-2, the VC said.

At present, the detection of the Corona virus is being done by Reverse Transcription-Polymerase Chain Reaction (RT-PCR) by using a real-time PCR machine. It’s very accurate for detecting Corona virus. But this technology is expensive, requires high-end laboratory-based equipment and is time-consuming. Expert personnel are also needed to operate the instrument and perform the testing in the laboratory. Thus, the capacity of sample handling per day is limited, he said.

He said that to overcome these drawbacks, A team led by Dr Jayadeep Bhattacharya from the School of Biotechnology, JNU, has designed a chip-based low-cost portable spatial RT-PCR.

Our technology is expected to cost Rs 60,000-1 lakh as compared to 10-15 lakh required for conventional real-time PCR, JNU VC said.

The JNU has already filed an Indian Patent application on this technology. Our technology can complete the testing in about 50 minutes as compared to 120-180 minutes required for conventional real-time PCR, he added.

He also said that the prototype testing device will be available very soon for demonstration.

The team working on the device consists of scientists from JNU (Dr. Jaydeep Bhattacharya, Dr. Rupesh Chaturvedi and Dr. Ravi Tandon), Amity University, Gurgaon (Dr. Ranjita Ghosh Moulick), Centre for Development of Advanced Computing, Kolkata (Dr. Souvik Pal and Dr. Subrata Sarkar) and Vardhman Mahavir Medical College and Safdarjung Hospital, New Delhi (Dr. Sameer Gulati), he said.

The JNU Student’s Union called for a university strike on October 5 as a part of protest against the administration for debarring their presence at the academic council meeting; the protest took place outside the academic council meeting.

According to JNUSU it was the meeting, “where the dubious proposal of online entrance examination” was to be imposed. They allegedly stated that “the online entrance examination is a policy intended to destroy, dismantle and shut down JNU. Last year’s admission data with details of reservation are also being withheld by the vice-chancellor”, claiming that he seeks one timetable, one syllabus and one system for JNU. The message circulated by the JNUSU appealing the students to participate in the strike read, “We cannot allow JNU VC to destroy JNU. Let’s stand united and resist the Draconian move.” N Sai Balaji, JNUSU president added that the VC “did not even bother to invite the office bearers” which makes it clear that “the administration plans to push regressive anti-student policies on us.”
The university administration responded to these allegations in a press note by saying that the office bearers of JNUSU are not the members of academic council and remain only special invitees to such meetings.
