The University of Delhi (DU) has proudly announced the selection of 140 outstanding students for its prestigious Vice Chancellor Internship Scheme (VCIS) for the 2024-2025 academic session. This initiative, designed to provide students with practical experience and enhance their academic journey, is set to run from June to July 2024.

Financial Support and Flexible Commitment

Each intern selected for the VCIS will receive a stipend of Rs 10,500, providing financial support while they gain valuable work experience. The internship requires a commitment of 20 hours per week, offering flexibility to balance academic responsibilities with professional development. Upon successful completion, interns will be awarded a certificate from the Dean of Students’ Welfare, adding a significant credential to their academic profiles.

The selection process for this internship was rigorous and competitive. The Dean Students’ Welfare (DSW) office meticulously reviewed applications and conducted group discussions (GDs) from May 13 to 15. The eligibility criteria were stringent, with only those students who achieved a Semester Grade Point Average (SGPA) of 8.18 or above in their last semester exam being considered for the group discussions. Out of the 1,542 students who met this benchmark and were invited for the GD, the final selection saw 140 students being chosen for the internship.

The VCIS is part of DU’s broader strategy to foster a culture of experiential learning and professional readiness among its students. Interns will be placed in various departments and projects within the university, where they will work closely with faculty members and administrative officials. This hands-on experience is expected to provide insights into university operations, research projects, and administrative functions, thereby broadening the interns’ understanding and skills.

Encouragement for Future Applicants

Students who were not selected for the internship are encouraged to apply for other opportunities and to continue striving for academic and extracurricular excellence. The university aims to expand the VCIS and similar programs in the coming years to accommodate more students and provide even more enriching experiences.

A Stepping Stone to Success

As the 140 selected interns prepare to embark on their new roles, the University of Delhi stands proud of its commitment to nurturing talent and providing pathways to success for its students. The VCIS is not just an internship; it is a stepping stone towards a promising future for these young scholars.

Delhi University (DU) announced a significant policy change on Tuesday, introducing a supernumerary quota for single girl children starting from the academic session 2024-25. The announcement was made by DU registrar Vikas Gupta and other officials during a press conference at the Vice Chancellor’s Office, North Campus.

The new policy will allocate one additional seat in each course across all colleges for single girl children. This initiative aims to promote gender equality and support single girl children in accessing higher education.

This is the first time that the university will offer a supernumerary quota to a single girl child,” said Gupta. He further explained that the application process for this quota will be integrated into the Common Seat Allocation System (CSAS) portal, similar to the reservation arrangements made for orphan students last year. Colleges will verify the necessary proofs and documents before finalizing admissions.

The announcement coincided with the launch of the CSAS portal for undergraduate programme admissions. The university offers nearly 71,000 seats across 79 undergraduate programmes and 183 BA combinations in 69 colleges and departments.

The UG admission process will proceed in two phases, based on scores obtained in the Common University Entrance Test (CUET). For the Non-Collegiate Women’s Education Board (NCWEB) and the School of Open Learning (SOL), admissions will be based on Class 12 marks. Registration for NCWEB started on Tuesday, while SOL admissions will commence on June 3.

In the first phase of CSAS, candidates must fill in personal and academic details, including their CUET application number. The application fee is set at ₹250 for unreserved, OBC, and economically weaker sections, and ₹100 for scheduled castes, scheduled tribes, and persons with benchmark disabilities.

The second phase will begin with the declaration of CUET results, requiring students to complete preference-filling for programmes and colleges. A DU official highlighted the importance of aligning Class 12 subjects with CUET domain papers for eligibility.

DU will admit 20% extra students in each programme for general, OBC, and EWS categories, and 30% for SC, ST, and PwBD categories to maximize seat utilization. Colleges with less than 5% withdrawal rates last year will see 10% extra allotments for UR, OBC(NCL), and EWS, and 15% for SC, ST, and PwBD categories.

Additionally, a “mid-entry phase ” will allow late applicants to apply through a separate window announced later by the university. This comprehensive admission process ensures optimal seat allocation and opportunities for all students.

Delhi University continues to lead in providing inclusive and innovative educational opportunities, setting a benchmark for higher education institutions across the country. With its forward-thinking policies and commitment to excellence, DU remains a beacon of hope and progress for students from diverse backgrounds.

As the temperature in Delhi soars between 48 and 50 degrees Celsius, students of Delhi University (DU) find themselves facing not only academic challenges but also the extreme weather conditions. Despite the India Meteorological Department (IMD)’s yellow alert for the ongoing heatwave, these young individuals have no choice but to step out of the comfort of their homes and PG accommodations to attend their exams.

Preparing for the Heat

Equipped with protective gear and bottles of water-based drinks, DU students are taking proactive steps to mitigate the effects of the oppressive heat. Many are seen wearing hats, carrying umbrellas, and donning light, breathable clothing to help keep their bodies cool. The scorching heat has also led to a noticeable increase in the consumption of hydrating beverages such as electrolyte drinks, lemon water, and traditional Indian coolers like aam panna and chaas.

Battling the Blues and the Heat

The relentless heatwave has not only made physical endurance a necessity but has also impacted students’ mental stamina. The pressure of exams combined with the discomfort of the heat can be overwhelming. To cope, many students are adopting new strategies to stay focused and calm.

Exam Halls: A Test of Resilience

Stepping into the sweltering exam halls, students are greeted by the reality of minimal relief from the heat. While some exam centers are equipped with fans, the high temperatures often render them insufficient. The lack of air conditioning in many halls adds to the struggle.

Precautions for Students During a Heatwave

Delhi University students facing exams amid an intense heatwave must take specific precautions to ensure their well-being. Here are some essential tips to help them sustain and perform their best under such extreme conditions:

  1. Stay Hydrated
  • Drink Plenty of Water: Carry a reusable water bottle and drink regularly, even if you don’t feel thirsty. Dehydration can affect concentration and overall health.
  • Electrolyte Drinks: Include oral rehydration solutions (ORS) or electrolyte drinks to replenish lost salts and minerals.
  • Avoid Caffeine and Sugary Drinks: These can lead to dehydration. Opt for water, coconut water, or traditional Indian coolers like aam panna and chaas.

2. Dress Appropriately

  • Light and Breathable Clothing: Wear cotton or linen fabrics that allow your skin to breathe and help keep your body cool.
  • Protective Gear: Use hats, caps, or scarves to shield yourself from direct sunlight. Sunglasses can protect your eyes, and carrying an umbrella can provide portable shade.

3. Manage Your Environment: Consider using portable fans or cooling towels. Soak a towel in cold water and place it on your neck or wrists to cool down your body temperature while going to exam centre or while writing paper.

With temperatures expected to remain high, DU students continue to face the dual challenge of academic pressure and extreme heat. The resilience and adaptability displayed by these young individuals highlight their determination to succeed despite the odds.

As the heatwave persists, the hope is that both institutional support and individual strategies will help students not only survive but thrive in these testing times.

In a disturbing turn of events, two prominent colleges of Delhi University (DU), Lady Shri Ram (LSR) College and Sri Venkateswara College, received bomb threat calls on Thursday morning, prompting a swift response from the Delhi Police and Delhi Fire Service (DFS). This incident follows a recent series of similar threats targeting schools and hospitals in the national capital, raising serious concerns about public safety and security.

“The principal of the college received a message about a bomb in the afternoon. She instructed us to make rounds and keep an eye on the surroundings. Police and bomb disposal squad reached the college and conducted search operations, but nothing was found from the premises,” security guard of Lady Shri Ram College Prem Sagar Pandit told PTI.

The DFS reported receiving the initial threat call at 4:38 PM for LSR College, prompting the dispatch of two fire tenders to the scene. Shortly thereafter, Sri Venkateswara College reported a similar threat. Firefighters, along with Delhi Police officials, bomb disposal squads, and dog units, quickly converged on the campuses to conduct thorough searches.

This incident comes after bomb threats that have trouble schools across Delhi-NCR, Jaipur, Uttar Pradesh, and Bengaluru in recent weeks, all of which have turned out to be hoaxes. Just a day prior, a bomb threat email was sent to the Police Control Room in North Block, home to the Ministry of Home Affairs, further heightening security concerns.

Authorities have been on high alert, given the similarities between these threats and the broader pattern of recent hoaxes. On May 21, Delhi Police officials revealed that the bomb threat emails received by approximately 150 schools in early May were traced back to an IP address in Budapest, Hungary. Investigations suggest a potential “deeper conspiracy” possibly linked to a terror group, with suspicions pointing towards an ISIS module. This latest round of threats is believed to be part of the same campaign of intimidation aimed at disrupting the ongoing Lok Sabha elections.

The threatening emails, sent via the Europe-based mailing service “beeble.com,” contained explicit and violent language, claiming responsibility under the name “Terrorizer111.” The email read: “There’s a bomb inside of your university, but also inside of every Delhi University. Blood will scatter everywhere and we will slit your families’ throats as well.”

Despite the intense search operations at LSR and Sri Venkateswara College, no explosive devices or suspicious objects were found. Both institutions were declared safe after thorough inspections. The DFS and Delhi Police continue to investigate the origin and authenticity of the threat emails, urging the public to remain vigilant but calm.

The recurrence of these threats has sparked a broader conversation about security protocols in educational institutions and the need for international cooperation to track and neutralize such cyber threats. As the Delhi Police deepen their probe, they emphasize the importance of community awareness and prompt reporting of any suspicious activities to mitigate potential risks.

While the immediate crisis has been averted, the psychological impact on students and staff cannot be understated. Authorities are taking steps to provide necessary counseling and support services to those affected by the incidents. Enhanced security measures and increased patrols around educational institutions are expected to continue in the coming days to ensure the safety and well-being of all stakeholders.
