Examining the Integrity of NEET: A Crisis of Trust

Amid protests and echoes of a NEET re-test by students and organisations, alleging irregularities in the marking system used by NTA we have come across historical proceedings of the Supreme Court.

On July 8, the Supreme Court during its hearing stated that it was “ clear that leak of NEET UG question paper has taken place. We want to know the number of beneficiaries of question paper leak, and what action has been taken against them.” The bench of three judges (DY Chandrachud with Justices JB Pardiwala and Manoj Misra )  accepted that the NEET paper was leaked through telegram, WhatsApp and other electronic means. It stated that when such papers got leaked it spread like a ‘wildfire’.

Enquiry

They mentioned that the Court is aware of the fact that they are dealing with the lives of 23 lakh students. If the beneficiaries of the paper leaks are not found or arrested then the court has to order the reconduction of the examination. It has presented several questions to CBI and NTA and ordered them to file their affidavits by 5 pm July 10 and share these with petitioners as well. Court also wanted to know how many of them were among those students who were beneficiaries of grace marks provided by NTA. It  asked NTA regarding the steps taken to identify those beneficiaries, and the time duration between the leak of exams and occurrence on 5 May.

However, NTA was not in Favour of conducting of the entire exam again. It apprehended that it can  “seriously jeopardise” lakhs of honest candidates without proof of large-scale breach of confidentiality.

“It is also submitted that at the same time, in the absence of any proof of any large-scale breach of confidentiality in a pan-India examination, it would not be rational to scrap the entire examination and the results already declared,” the Centre said. “Scrapping the exam in its entirety would seriously jeopardise the lakhs of honest candidates who attempted the question paper in 2024,” the Education Ministry said.

Thus in a nutshell we can say that the center is in search of proof for mass malpractice with the questions of the examination system on 5th May. The next hearing is on 11th July when we can expect to observe the final decision.

CSAS Portal now invite freshers to DU

Delhi University has now opened the CSAS portal for the admission of freshers to the university. Thus, those CUET aspirants who are willing to pursue any course at Delhi University can now enrol themselves in the portal.

This time the university is providing 71000 seats for admission in 79 Undergraduate programs for 69 colleges.

“Admission to the DU UG courses for the academic session 2024-25 will be conducted through DU CSAS portal 2024,” DU Dean Admission Haneet Gandhi said in a press conference. This blog shall deal with the basics of the CSAS portal.

General instructions for students

  1. For the academic session 2024-25, all admissions will be valid only through online mode with the CSAS portal. No other offline means for admission will be considered valid
  2. The candidate who wishes to get admission to DU must be the CUET candidate this year conducted by NTA
  3. Candidature will not be considered as successful if the candidate doesn’t now fulfil the eligibility criteria for specific programs
  4. Candidates must pay the registration fees for each of these course
  5. After filing in the basic details thereby preferences the candidature will be accepted.
  6. DU officials said once a seat is allocated in a particular round, the candidate must “accept” the allocated seat before the last date for the given allocation round, with inactivity or inaction to be taken as non-acceptance to the allocated seat.

The selection will be solely based on the final score of CUET and in case of tie, the 12th marks will be considered as criteria.

University has also opened the portal for distance learning and NCWEB based on CUET and 12th scores

Reservation of seat for single girl child

In a press conference announcing the admission process, DU Registrar Vikas Gupta said that under its new supernumerary quota, one seat will be reserved for single girl children in each class across all departments in the university’s colleges.

Last year, the university introduced a supernumerary category to provide admissions to orphan students, a male and a female, in each program of each college.

“Admissions will open for 71,000 seats across 79 programs in undergraduate courses. A total of 183 subject combinations are available in BA programs across 69 colleges.

Admission to these programs is based on the merit score obtained on the Common University Entrance Test (CUET),” Mr Gupta said. The CUET UG exams are underway and the results are expected to be released on June 30.

Mapping

“Candidates will have to map the subjects studied by them in Class XII to the subjects in which they have written their CUET exams.

DU will only consider those CUET papers which are the same or similar to the subject studied by the candidate in school.” Mr Gupta said.

They will see their cumulative marks for the program there in the portal itself and thereby in phase 2 of CSAS, they have to map their college and course preferences in Delhi University.

Official website – https://ugadmission.uod.ac.in/

Thus, in a nutshell, it is apparent that fulfilling the set criteria of du CSAS is mandatory to get admission there. Please follow the guidelines provided in the official bulletin on the official website and check your eligibility.

Why DU for psychology?

Delhi University is among the top universities in the world providing psychology Hons degree. The diversity and the holistic environment help in the proper nurturing of budding psychologists. What a psychologist needs is an environment that fosters practical learning.

It must provide the exposure that those students need to work, and this is the same as what DU is providing. Being a psychologist is a matter of pride if you can continue it till a Ph.D. For any kind of research work, the government sponsors your research and the reputation you get is another bowl of rice.

Moreover, the networking opportunities and collaborations available at DU extend the avenues for groundbreaking research and professional growth. These collaborations often transcend disciplinary boundaries, fostering innovation and interdisciplinary dialogue.

As a result, graduates emerge not only with a deep understanding of psychology but also with a broader perspective that enriches their approach to problem-solving and societal challenges. Additionally, the global recognition of Delhi University’s psychology program opens doors to international opportunities, further enhancing the career prospects and academic pursuits of its graduates.

The major problem in psychology at DU

It can easily be observed that the majority of the colleges are women’s colleges providing seats for psychology.  It means for males there are only three options to choose from Aryabhatta College, Kesav Mahavidyalaya, and Zakir Hussain College. So, it narrows our limits for male students to choose from which college they want to pursue the degree.

Thus, there is an urgent need for Delhi University must increase the choices of male students too who want to pursue a degree in psychology. Recently Du has been working on the construction of its west and east campuses too which is a ray of hope to have multiple choices while filling out the preference sheet in DU.
