An Urgent Need: Reforms in examination

Amid the NEET controversy, now educationalists are in a view that the entire testing and examination system needs significant reforms. While preparing their tests, psychologists use a term known as ‘predictive validity’, which refers to a test that is valid if the results correlate with future behaviour. For instance, if any test does show that a person is a good leader then her behavior must correlate to the results of the test in the workplace too. Now the predictive validity of the tests is questionable with such controversies about whether such tests are measuring what they purport to measure.

For various controversial reasons, we got 67 toppers in the NEET examination this year. Not only in medical exams but lack of seats and gradual inflation of aspirants has become common now. We are lacking the required medical seats that can fulfil the doctor-population ratio which is required in society. After such problems were raised with the examination and the Supreme Court’s statement which questioned its “sanctity”, now students are questioning how viable it is to believe the testing agencies of government.

Also, institutions such as CBSE when conducting its exams, generally have a mixture of objective and subjective question papers are visible. It is to check the holistic abilities of the student. However, now it is also a questionable fact that how much predictive validity, just objective question papers or subjective papers in DU have? How viable it is to say now that a person scoring good marks on this paper will prove herself as a talented candidate?

Problems with just objective or subjective question papers

Especially in the disciplines of humanities and social sciences, the question papers are completely subjective at Delhi University. Exams of NTA inclusive of NEET and CUET are completely objective papers. Relying solely on just one format of paper does possess a lot of problems. Such as: –

  1. How is the subjective and diversity of knowledge checked when we just have objective question papers?
  2. How shall we ensure the fundamentals are clear when we do not have a single objective question in the question paper?
  3. Why are students in the view that filling the pages in exams, especially in DU will provide more marks?
  4. How practical is the reference list provided for DSCs of honours courses where it is generally observed that one semester is not of complete 6 months?
  5. Isn’t it viable to argue that guesswork plays a significant role too in objective questions? When we have four options there is a 25 percent probability of one option being correct even in random guesses.
  6. How inclusive is today’s examination pattern?

Voice of reforms

In 1948 Radha Krishnanan Commission postulated that “If we are to suggest one single reform in University Education, it should be that of examinations.”

The NPERC states that “Examination reform cannot be construed as an isolated activity to bring about process orientation. It has to go as a package along with reform in the structuring of courses and flexibility for students to avail of the restructured courses according to their convenience.”

Thus, it is very apparent here that voices are there in Favour of the need for reforms. We have to make the examinations more inclusive and as per the market demands. It is an unfortunate situation for us that educated students are finding it difficult to fit themselves in the market.

Suggestive reforms

We need a change and direction here. The following changes can help us to make these examinations more viable.

  1. Inclusion of industries in setting up examination patterns. Finding jobs in the cluttered market seems to be difficult as the standards are not equivalent to it. If we want an employed youth, the process framing of the curriculum itself must have the contribution of industries and the required skill set.
  2. We must have both objective and subjective patterns of examination to make it more inclusive and diverse.
  3. We need a separate committee to examine the viability of the present examination system.
  4. There is a need for decentralization of political power in the education sector. Thus, the reforms can be implemented from grass root levels
  5. The paper leaks and exam mafias do require ‘treatment’ from the government. It is very unfortunate for students to see their efforts vanish as a result.
  6. Students need more transparency in the evaluation process.

Thus, in a nutshell, we can conclude that it is high time to make the examination system much more viable. We need an accurate, viable and transparent examination system that can provide a level playing field for everyone.

Environmental crisis: Curse to Delhiites

Delhi is now in a position of extreme environmental crisis. This city is suffering the curse for the sins that it has committed to the environment. The increasing extremeness of the temperature, increasing water shortages, the higher usage of concrete and heavy constructions, lack of greenery and regular pollution in winter are now habitual to Delhiites. Environmentalists claim that breathing in Delhi will mean that you are constantly cutting down your total number of breaths for your life. All organisms including humans are now the victims of the environmental crisis in this megacity. Thus, the situation is so alarming that it demands urgent limelight. However, for no reason the topic is lying in vain which can have catastrophic ramifications for us.

Water shortage in Delhi

Delhi government on May 29 has directed to impose a fine of ₹2000 on water wastage. This decision has a background of water shortage that erupted in Delhi. Delhiites are now in a position to fight to get a bucket of water through tankers. Delhi water minister Atishi has written to Haryana chief minister Nayab Singh Siani and UP chief minister Yogi Adityanath to release additional water for the capital for 1 month till the monsoon arrives.

Delhi depends on its neighbouring states for the fulfilment of 86.5 % of its water supply. The minister mentioned that the increase in water demand amid heatwaves and the gradual decrement of the level of Yamuna River’s lower-than-normal level of 674.5 feet are the main reasons behind this shortage. Yamuna River is polluted too with harmful Arsenic components in its refinement has an additional financial burden on the government.

The fatal heatwave attack

Currently, Delhi is also suffering from fatal heatwave attacks. The New Indian Express reported that 87 deaths have been reported due to severe heatwaves in Delhi. The situation is fatal as the average temperature is roaming around 50 degrees Celsius these days and breaking the records of climatic history. We can anticipate the major reasons behind it can be the increase in urbanization and a decrement in the green belt in the cities.

Hindustan Times reported that over 7500 trees have been cut down for Delhi-Dehradun highways. The attempts for the transplantation of trees and replantation remain futile due to a lack of post-plantation care for plants and trees. An increase in urbanization has raised the demand for concrete which tends to absorb the heat thus forming a trap. This tap is also responsible for increasing heatwaves that already have proved fatal. This gradual increase in temperature needs an alarming remedial measure to get rid of health problems arising here.

Annual pollution: Every citizen smokes here

Hindustan Times reported that breathing freely in the air of Delhi during winter means you are consuming at least 30 cigarettes every day. The cancerous atmosphere in Delhi is something that has been in the limelight for years, but no concrete measure has solved this issue inspired by the ‘intelligent’ attempts made to solve it.

The major source of pollution we can attribute to vehicular emissions and stubble burning in neighbouring states. This stubble can be controlled with the recommended scientific measure, but the only loophole that remains is in the system of execution. Although Grap measures and an odd-even system have been introduced to solve the environmental crisis in Delhi. Unfortunately, it failed to produce the expected results. This pollution is resulting in diseases including Asthma and other lung diseases that are gradually depreciating the average life span of Delhiites inside the borders of Delhi

What is the way forward to solve envrionmenatl crisis?

To solve this issue, we require strict and concrete measures here if we want to get a humane environment. Having clean Air and water is part of Article 21 of the constitution thus the urgent measures to get our nature back is the necessity of time.

  1. The water pollution in Yamuna requires some high-tech solutions. Recently Anand Mahindra offered help to anyone who can engage in startups of robots cleaning water. The government is already spending a lot on refining Yamuna water and on heavy machinery to clean it.

If we transfer that budget to procure AI robots and tools to automatically absorb the waste present, there and magnetically attract all iron-made objects. Then it can help to make the process faster.

  1. To solve the problem of air pollution, the only apparent way is to stop the burning of stubble. Thus, heavy investment in Recycling or collection of stubble is required here. Thus, a direction of funds can only solve the problem with present execution
  1. Green belts needed to be increased to balance the greenery loss here. Post-plantation care should also be the responsibility of a specially formed committee of government to at least allow them to grow feasibly.

Thus, in a nutshell, we shall conclude that we are in an era of environmental crisis that requires urgent attention. If we want to give a safe and healthy land to our next generation the topic which deserves the limelight must be provided limelight in the context in which it demands.

On July 12, London, ever since England’s defeat in the Euro 2020 final, black players in the team were subjected to a barrage of racist online abuse, prompting widespread condemnation from the squad’s captain, manager, royalty, religious leaders, and politicians. Marcus Rashford, 23, Jadon Sancho, 21, and Bukayo Saka, 19, were the targets of abuse after missing penalty kicks in a penalty shootout with Italy that decided Sunday’s final after the game finished 1-1.

On social media, the three were bombarded with “offensive and racist” posts. Many well-known public personalities have criticised the outpouring of hatred, and the Metropolitan Police has confirmed it is looking into at least some of the social media.

William, who is the president of the Football Association, tweeted on the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge’s official Twitter account Monday morning, “It is utterly unacceptable that players have to endure this repulsive behaviour.” “It must stop now, and all those involved must be held accountable,” he wrote, signing off with a “W” for William.

Many have praised William for his comments about racism in soccer, but many have criticised him for not publicly defending his biracial sister-in-law Meghan Markle from sexist and racist abuse she has faced both online and offline.

The players’ union, the Professional Footballers’ Association, stated that “When you abuse any of our players, you abuse all of us. Racist abuse causes trauma. It will impact the targeted players, their teammates, and we know it will also affect their peers”. A mural in Manchester, England, depicting Rashford and celebrating his charitable work was defaced in a “racially aggravated” manner, according to police.

The harassment was described as “unforgivable” by England’s national team coach, Gareth Southgate. “It’s not what we stand for,” Southgate said at a press conference on Monday, applauding Rashford, Sancho, and Saka’s performances. “We’re healing as a team now, and we’re there for them, and I know 99 per cent of the audience will be, too, because they’ll recognise how brilliantly they performed.”

Following England’s highly televised loss to Italy in the Euro 2020 final on Sunday, British Prime Minister Boris Johnson criticised racial abuse directed at several of the team’s Black players. At a news conference later that evening, Johnson expressed his desire that those who perpetrated abuse would “crawl back under the rock from which you emerged.”Since the game, none of the three players involved has made any public statements.

According to Musa Okwonga, an English soccer journalist of the Stadio football podcast, after the game, the abuse began. She quoted “Hate is a strong word. But the racist relying on black English footballers to bring them glory as if they were their servants, then turning on them as soon as they fell short of their dreams, have my deepest contempt”.

Racism has long plagued English players, and many have spoken out about it in recent years, including Rashford, who this year called racist abuse from soccer fans “humanity and social media at its worst.” During this year’s Euro tournament, England’s team took a knee before games to protest racial inequality, much to the chagrin of some fans.

Delhi University students can apply for confidential result

Delhi University (DU) students applying for further studies or jobs will now be able to get their “confidential result” online before the official declaration, the university has said in a notification.

Dean Examinations D S Rawat said the process had been “streamlined” to make it more effective.

To apply online, students will need to submit an application that should “clearly mention the reason of requirement of confidential result”, along with the “offer letter that indicates the requirement of result”. They will also need to submit the copy of each semester’s marksheet, admit card, and fee receipt of Rs 500.

Rawat said DU would “try” to issue such results by the end of July. “We have asked students to request their institutions to extend the date of submission of result, given the unusual circumstances due to the pandemic. But if it doesn’t work out, I am willing to write to them as Dean Examinations, and request the same,” he said.

The whole process has been made online. There is no need for students to visit their colleges. The last date for applying is July 3, and for principals to forward it to the university, the deadline is July 6. We did this as last year we had issued around 650 confidential results, but received 4-5 times the number of applications, many of them with incomplete details. This delays the whole process,” said Rawat.

In the notification further read , “Generally it takes 2-3 months’ time to complete the evaluation and declare the result, so students are advised to request the concerned universities/institutions to extend the date of submission of result. Students are advised to talk only to the Nodal Officers of the respective colleges regarding confidential result or result related queries.”
